The internet of things refers to wearable devices such as Fitbits and smartwatches, to wearable heart monitors, to thermostats, to smart grids, which are all connected to the internet. And it’s this “Internet of Everything” that has Dr. Ann Cavoukian concerned about our potential future path of “surveillance”. As Executive Director of the Privacy and Big Data Institute at Ryerson University, she explains the importance of why privacy must be embedded into the design of these interconnected devices and programs.
